UC Riverside photography museum hosts exhibit of blind photographers

A new exhibit at UC Riverside's California Museum of Photography explores the work of artists working in, or near, total blindness. For some of them, the world is a permanent dark room. KPCC's Steven Cuevas discovered that the camera may be their only toehold to the world of the sighted, but the exhibit may offer sighted people a new perspective on blindness.

Steven Cuevas comes to KPCC most recently by way of Texas, where he helped establish the first public radio newsroom at KUT in Austin. Steven reported on issues ranging from transportation and state politics to music and culture. He also filed stories for NPR, the BBC, and various programs.

A third generation San Franciscan, Steven reported for KQED's California Report for several years before migrating to Texas in 2002. Steven's radio career began in the mid-1980s as a teenaged D.J. at college radio station KUSF in San Francisco.

Steven and his longtime partner Judy now call Riverside home. They own several thousand books and records, and two 25-year-old Cockatiels. To relieve stress, Steven likes to run long distances and lift heavy things.
