LA Councilman Bernard Parks gives bleak picture of city budget

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday is expected to approve a budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1. The $7 billion spending plan includes hundreds of layoffs and deep cuts in services to address a budget deficit of $520 million that was brought on by the foreclosure crisis and recession. The budget picture could worsen, as KPCC's Frank Stoltze reports.


Anti-Villaraigosa sentiment apparent in Trutanich victory

The election of Carmen Trutanich as Los Angeles City Attorney signals more than the arrival of a newcomer to city politics. It marks the defeat of one of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's closest allies. Governor urges voters to approve propositions

Governor Schwarzenegger and Speaker of the State Assembly Karen Bass were in South Los Angeles on Sunday. Both were looking for voters to support Propositions 1A through 1F on Tuesday's ballot. The six measures would raise taxes, expand the lottery, and shift mental health and child development funding to help address California's gaping budget deficit. They would also place a cap on future spending, and create a "rainy day" reserve. KPCC's Frank Stoltze caught up with the state's top Republican and top Democrat.


LA voters to choose new city attorney

A newcomer to Los Angeles politics hopes to upset a City Hall insider in Tuesday's election for city attorney. Defense lawyer Carmen Trutanich faces Westside City Councilman Jack Weiss in a race the legal community is closely watching. The city attorney plays a key role in L.A., issuing legal advice to elected officials and departments and a range of issues from development to policing and representing the city in legal matters. The job can also be a stepping stone to higher office. KPCC's Frank Stoltze reports.


Chu and Cedillo face off in race to replace former congresswoman Solis

Next week's congressional election in the San Gabriel Valley is a test of the political strength of a longtime Asian-American politician in a majority Latino district. Board of Equalization Vice Chair Judy Chu faces State Senator Gil Cedillo in the race to replace Hilda Solis, who resigned the seat to become President Obama's labor secretary. Frank Stoltze was born and raised in Santa Barbara, where his father taught him how to body surf and golf and his mother showed him how to tell a good story.

Frank graduated from Southern Methodist University with Doak Walker and started his radio career in San Luis Obispo, cutting his teeth covering Diablo Canyon and the Monarch Butterfly grove. He went to work for KLON (now KKJZ) in Long Beach in 1991 and covered the riots before becoming news director at KPFK, where he learned who Noam Chomsky is.

Frank joined KPCC in 2000 and loves its downtown bureau, a stone's throw from Central Market tortas.
