California Supreme Court upholds Proposition 8

A little more than a year after it declared same-sex marriage legal in California, the state Supreme Court today upheld the voter-approved ban on the very same thing. The justices ruled - by a 6-to-1 vote - that last November's Proposition 8 will stand. The decision reveals the state high court's reluctance to tamper with voter-approved constitutional amendments. The court also decided not to tamper the 18,000 or so same-sex marriages that happened under its previous ruling. Those marriages are legal - and will remain so. KPCC's Julie Small was on the steps of the courthouse in San Francisco when the justices issued their decision.


Homecare providers protest budget cuts

The state's budget shortfall is massive - and Governor Schwarzenegger says severe cuts in health care and human services are coming. Homecare providers in the Southland took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles Friday to tell the governor to keep his scissors away from their salaries. KPCC's Brian Watt reports.


Local dealers ponder next step after Chrysler announces closures

Chrysler today delivered bad news to about a quarter of its 3,200 dealerships nationwide. They'll have to close so the company can straighten out its finances - and hook up with Italian automaker Fiat. Thirty-two of those doomed dealers are in California. Brian Watt came to KPCC from Marketplace. As a producer there for 3.5 years, he filed a number of his own stories and even filled in some mornings as host.

Brian got his first job in broadcasting at age 11. He was a co-anchor for a television news magazine for children in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.

He holds degrees in Theater from Yale University and the Sorbonne, and has worked as an actor in France, Italy, Brazil, Hungary and... Hollywood. He appeared in a few television shows, including "The West Wing," "Judging Amy," and "The District."
