Iconic jazz club loses its lease

Since it opened 16 years ago, the Jazz Bakery's become one of the top jazz clubs in the Southland, attracting the country's top musicians. It's a listening room; that is, a concert room free of waiters and clinking glasses and plates. This Sunday's show will be the last at the venue's longtime home in the historic Helms Bakery building. Law enforcement arrests scores of Hawaiian Gardens street gang members

For almost four years federal an L.A. County law enforcement agencies have been investigating the inner workings of a gang known as "Varrio Hawaiian Gardens." This morning, officials announced an early morning sweep that netted 90 of the gang's members, leaders, and associates in the southeastern part of the county. UCLA announced recently that it's purchased the archives of seminal Los Angeles writer John Fante. Scholars believe the documents shed light on an important mid-20th century novelist and his times. 38 LA Unified teachers, union leaders arrested while protesting layoffs

Leaders of United Teachers Los Angeles followed through today on their promise to engage in acts of civil disobedience after an L.A. Superior Court judge ruled illegal the union's one-day strike. To protest planned teacher layoffs the union blocked the street in front of L.A. Unified headquarters. KPCC's Adolfo Guzman-Lopez says 38 union members were arrested in what they called an act of civil disobedience.


Judge blocks 1-day strike planned by LAUSD teachers union

Just three days before a planned one-day strike by L.A. Unified's teachers union, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge blocked the job action, saying it would violate the union's contract. KPCC's Adolfo Guzman-Lopez has the story.


Superintendent to ask regulators to stop planned teachers 1-day strike

L.A. Unified Superintendent Ramon Cortines says he's filing a complaint today with the state's Public Employee Relations Board to stop teachers from carrying out a one-day strike next week. KPCC's Adolfo Guzman-Lopez has more.

Adolfo Guzman-Lopez began his journalism career writing about the arts for, among others, Tijuana's La Tarde newspaper, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Chicago Tribune. He later served as senior producer of These Days, KPBS-FM's daily talk show in San Diego.

Adolfo is also an accomplished poet. He has toured nationally with The Taco Shop Poets, the performance poetry troupe he co-founded. His poetry has been published in various journals, and in Geography of Rage: Remembering the Los Angeles Riots of 1992.
