Venice Old and New: KPCC Marks Venice Centennial

Pasadena, CA (Mon., June 27) - 89.3 KPCC's Talk of the City travels to Venice's Electric Lodge Theater on Tuesday, June 28th to mark the city's 100th anniversary. The program will be recorded from 7-8 pm, and will air on Friday, July 1st, from 2-3 pm.

Venice was originally called "Venice of America." One hundred years ago, on the fourth of July, entrepreneur Abbott Kinney realized his dream of creating a beachfront development that would be both a social and cultural showplace and the site of an American renaissance. The canals are still around, but what about the original plan for the city? And what about the future of a town that is home to hippies, artists and multi-million dollar mansions by the sea? Talk of the City Host Kitty Felde will bring together a group of local experts on Venice past, present and future, including historian Jill Prestup; street performer Harry Perry; activist Jerry Rubin; and LA city councilman-elect Bill Rosendahl, who will be sworn in over the weekend as part of the centennial festivities. www.venicecentennial.com and www.veniceartscouncil.org

The Electric Lodge Theater is at 1416 Electric Avenue in Venice. The taping will be FREE and open to the public. Please RSVP to talkofthecity@kpcc.org

This program is supported in part by Southern California Edison.

Kitty Felde has been named Journalist of the Year by both the LA Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists. Talk of the City is part of KPCC's award-winning newsroom.
