Los Angeles, May 3-- During the month of May, KPCC 89.3 FM will mark the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling with a series of four community discussions. The forums, moderated by Larry Mantle, host of Airtalk, and Kitty Felde, host of Talk of the City, will be taped in various locations throughout the region and then broadcast on the shows over the next few weeks.
Talk of the City will host the first of these community forums this Thursday, May 6th at 1 p.m. at Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School, 2000 N. Bristol Street, in Santa Ana. The discussion is scheduled to air on Friday, May 7th at 2 p.m.
The program will focus on the historical circumstances surrounding the precedent-setting 1946 Mendez vs. Westminster case, considered a precursor to the Brown decision, at the school named after the original litigant Gonzalo Mendez. Guests include Sylvia Mendez, daughter of Gonzalo Mendez, and UC Irvine Professor of Social Science Gilbert Gonzalez. This community forum is sponsored by the California Community Foundation and Washington Mutual.
The next forum in the series takes place on Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at John Muir High School in Pasadena. It will focus on the history of busing in Pasadena, and will be aired on AirTalk on Monday, May 17. The final two AirTalk forums take place on Wednesday, May 26 at the Japanese American National Museum and Thursday, May 27 at the Mark Taper Auditorium of the Richard J. Riordan Central Library, with the legacy of Brown vs. Board as their topic.
