News Release
April 20, 2007

University of Redlands KUOR 89.1 FM to Bring Award-Winning Public Radio News to Inland Area Starting April 21

The University of Redlands announced today that it has signed an agreement with Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) to assume program operations for the university's radio station, KUOR 89.1 FM, starting Saturday, April 21. Inland Empire residents will be able to tune to KUOR 89.1 FM for 24-hour public radio news – the most complete NPR and American Public Media national programming in the region alongside reports from the award-winning newsroom of 89.3 KPCC FM in Pasadena, also part of the SCPR network.

The agreement with SCPR brings a host of benefits to the University of Redlands. KUOR's broadcast facilities on campus will be upgraded and equipped for HD digital radio transmission, allowing for certain university events to be broadcast. SCPR will house its Inland Empire News Bureau at the station, allowing for more coverage of Inland area news, and will feature one live remote broadcast from campus per year. SCPR will provide up to six paid internships per year for University of Redlands students, and identification and promotion of the university on air will be expanded and include public service announcements.

Prior to its agreement with SCPR, KUOR had been broadcasting the programming of KKJZ under an agreement with Pacific Public Radio (PPR). The foundation of California State University, Long Beach, which owns the station, will end its relationship with PPR on Saturday.

"We are excited to be teaming with Southern California's leading public radio news station to bring this programming to the Inland Empire," said University of Redlands President Stuart Dorsey. "Our relationship with SCPR will provide a tremendous benefit for the university, our students and community – and for those in the area looking for the kind of quality public radio news and programs that SCPR provides."

President Dorsey said that KUOR's broadcasting of SCPR's programming fits the University of Redlands's mission. "As an NPR and American Public Media member station, the programs produced, acquired and broadcast by SCPR are consistent with the university's educational and public service mission," he said. Bill Davis, president and CEO of SCPR, called the agreement to operate KUOR a "perfect complement."

"SCPR is delighted to work with the University of Redlands and its radio station, KUOR. The University of Redlands is a leading educational institution in the Southland and it shares SCPR's commitment to improving the quality of civic and cultural life in Southern California," said Davis.

"We are thrilled that programs such as AirTalk with Larry Mantle, Patt Morrison and Off-Ramp will reach new audiences in the Inland Empire – and we're excited that voices from communities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties will become a regular part of SCPR's programming on both KUOR and KPCC," he said.

With a local newsroom that has won more than 150 awards for journalistic excellence, SCPR produces local talk shows that take an in-depth look at issues affecting Southern California: the weekday programs with renowned columnist Patt Morrison and Larry Mantle's AirTalk, and the weekend news, life and arts magazine, Off-Ramp with John Rabe. SCPR is also the local home for public radio's signature programs, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, Fresh Air, Day to Day, Car Talk, A Prairie Home Companion, Marketplace and the BBC World Service.

Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) is a non-profit organization that operates 89.3 KPCC-FM under an agreement with Pasadena City College (PCC). In addition to its primary broadcast facility at PCC, SCPR maintains bureaus in downtown Los Angeles, Sacramento, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
